Educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all

educar la mente, sin educar el corazón, no hay educación en absoluto

Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop

We hope to foster a love for reading and writing in our first graders. During workshop sessions, students are introduced to a new concept or skill in a minilesson and then set to work on the skill independently while teachers conference with students one on one and in small groups. As students build their independence, they set goals for themselves as life long learners.

Math Workshop

Students learn through hands on experiences. We encourage children to think critically about mathematical concepts and learn from one another about efficient problem solving strategies. During workshop sessions, students are introduced to a story problem and then are given the opportunity to work alongside one another to grapple with the challenge. Students then sit together as a class during the discourse and engage in a mathematical conversations about their methods when problem solving. This is the most valuable portion of math workshop, as students hear and learn from one another.

Project Workshop

Students engage in authentic discoveries about the world based on their interests, wonderings, and questions. Students will speak to experts, attend fieldwork, and create products designed to impact communities. During workshop sessions, students research, read, write, and explore concepts and topics related to the project they are currently working on. For our "Fly with Me" project, students are studying how birds inspire flight. They will study aerodynamics and engage in the following question: How can we, as first grade engineers, teach others about the inspiration of flight?

Fieldwork

The purpose of fieldwork is to give students authentic real world experiences of the content they are exploring in the classroom. During this time, students ask questions, speak to experts in the field they are researching, and receive hands on learning opportunities. Fieldwork experiences make classroom content more accessible to learners as they receive first hand knowledge from experts themselves.
